Designs that work on country life
The Herald, New Homes Review, March 17th 2004
Country living, it seems, has never been more attractive to homebuyers. As city centre prices continue to rise, homebuyers, especially those who would like a little more living space and quality of life for their money, are finding countryside luxury developments an ever-more popular option. However too many so-called 'country developments' seem to bear little relationship to what most of us think of as traditional rural life. Often they are simply too big or too far away from an existing village community.

Alexander Morton Homes new development at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire offers homebuyers the opportunity to be part of a small grouping of homes within a real village community. The village is well-placed for an easy commute with easy road and rail links to Glasgow, Kilmarnock and the airports

The eleven 4 and 5-bedroom country homes fit in well to their elevated position at the edge of the historic village. 'As an Ayrshire family firm we're determined to build beautiful homes in real Ayrshire places,' says operations manager, Alex Benson, 'this is attractive to both local homebuyers and those who are looking for a different lifestyle experience.'

Producing homes for comfortable country living requires special design skills with attention to the details and realities of everyday country life. Features which can be stunning in a townhouse often need some extra effort if they are to work in country homes which are to be practical and enjoyable living spaces for their owners.

For instance, the centre-piece of Alexander Morton's 4 bed Nightingale homestyle is a superb hallway, which at 3 metres by 5 metres is as big as many lounges.

The whole house flows from this incredible space and as you move from room to room you're impressed by the sense of space and light. Glass double doors and patio doors add to this impression throughout the house.

However without proper planning an entrance hall of those proportions could simply mean a larger area of carpet to attract an even longer trail of muddy footprints. However, taking a leaf out of the book of traditional country homes, the Nightingale has a side door from the garden leading into a utility room, so that muddy boots, spades, wet dogs and children can be dealt with easily and with minimum fuss. All making for hassle-free country living. Another practical feature is the tiled family bathroom from leading continental supplier, Porcelanosa… however this is a 'cold-toes- friendly' heated tiled floor.

The other housestyle for sale at High Langmuir is the deceptively compact Sandpiper. With the realities of Ayrshire weather in mind, this homestyle comes complete with a stylish double glazed conservatory, bringing all the light and colour from the landscaped garden into a flexible living space. The conservatory leads into a stylish kitchen dining room with a huge range of kitchens to choose from a choice of suppliers.
